SCIOTOVILLE — The Symmes Valley Vikings needed a win.
Well, they got the win and then some.
Bronx Carpenter tossed 6 touchdown passes, Dylan Urban caught two touchdowns and ran for another, and the Vikings offense erupted to the tune of a 47-8 rout of the East Tartans in a Southern Ohio Conference game on Friday night at Jim "Snuffy" Smith Field at Allard Park.
Carpenter finished the night completing 16 of 21 passes for 288 yards to go along with his half dozen touchdowns. Urban caught 2 balls for 34 yards, ran for 62 yards and even completed 3 passes for 105 yards.
Symmes Valley head coach Ben Ferguson praised the play of his freshman quarterback and the rest of the offense for stepping up.
"Tonight was kind of the game we were waiting on to see what (Carpenter) was capable of," said Ferguson, "We've known it for a while. But just kind of getting in those right circumstances, getting right guys in the good rotation with the skill position. They all stepped up tonight."
Things started off sluggish for the Vikings, as East was able to recover a surprise onside kick to begin the game. But the defense came up with the games' first turnover as Jackson Fields picked off a Kaiden Hutson pass from inside the 10 to foil the Tartans first possession.
Symmes Valley (3-4, 2-1 SOC I) pieced together a 10-play drive to score the games' first points. Carpenter hit Asher Maynard on a quick out on fourth-and-goal to give the Vikings a 6-0 lead with 6:50 left in the opening quarter.
The Tartans (1-7, 0-3) got a 77-yard kickoff return from Tycyn Pernell, as the junior broke towards the home side and raced up the sideline before being pushed out at the 2. Lineman-turned-fullback Bryton Lennix surged in from one yard out to put the Tartans on the board. Keagan Barker ran in the two-point conversion and the Tartans led 8-6.
"Slow starts are one of the biggest things we're hounding on", said Ferguson, "But it was good to see out kids rise to the occasion after getting punched a little bit and keep it rolling through the game and hopefully we keep it rolling through the season."
The Vikings took the lead for good at the start of the second quarter, as Carpenter hit Urban on a 20-yard touchdown pass to finish off a 6-play drive and made the score 12-8.
Following a three-and-out by East, the Vikings needed just four plays this time to get into the end zone. Carpenter found Gradee Holland for a 27 yard gain on first down and dead ball penalty on the play helped to put the Vikings deep in East territory. Two plays later, Carpenter and Urban hooked up again from 14-yards out to extend the Symmes Valley lead to 18-8 with 8:49 remaining before halftime.
Another East drive stalled out near midfield, giving the ball back to the Vikings.
Will Jones caught a short pass from Carpenter on second down and turned it into a 45-yard gain and put the Vikings at the East 14. On the next play, Carpenter found Levi Russell for the touchdown. Urban caught the two-point conversion pass to make it 26-8.
"Dylan is truly the definition of a swiss army knife. He can throw it, he can run it, he can catch it, he plays defense. He's just a special athlete," said Ferguson, "No matter where you stick him, he's going to try his hardest and give 110% and we're happy to have him."
The Vikings got the ball to bounce their way on the ensuing kickoff as the ball bounced off the chest of an East returner and Russell was there to recover the ball at the 30.
Two plays later, Carpenter hit Asher Maynard down the seam, and the freshman rumbled his way through defenders into the end zone for the score. Carpenter found Jones for the two point play and extended the Vikings lead to 34-8.
Carpenter tossed his sixth and final touchdown pass of the night with 17 second left in the half, hitting Andy Strow along the sidelines for the score and a 40-8 lead at the break for Symmes Valley.
The Tartans came out and drove the ball down the field, reaching the Vikings 17. But the drive was halted when Branson Edwards stepped in front of a Hutson pass for the interception.
The Vikings cashed in on the turnover, as Urban added the final exclamation point on the from the quarterback position. Urban rolled to his left and found nobody around, tucked it, and raced 53-yards up the East sideline for the final score of the night. Trey Campbell added the extra point to make it 47-8.
Maynard led all receivers with 6 catches for 94 yards. Strow and Holland each caught three balls for 57 and 70 yards respectively.
The Vikings will be back on the road next Friday against Portsmouth Notre Dame. East will travel to face Green.
