Vikings rally in 6th inning, clinch share of SOC title

WILLOW WOOD — Saturday was Thunder in the Valley, Monday was Championship in the Valley.


Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the Symmes Valley Vikings put together a 2-out, 5-run rally to beat the Oak Hill Oaks 6-3 and clinch a share of the Southern Ohio Conference II championship on Monday night.


The Vikings are now 11-6 on the season and finish 9-1 in the SOC and tied with Oak Hill.

Tanner Corn and Mason Stevenson both delivered solid pitching performances. Corn went 4 innings, giving up 4 hits, striking out 5 and allowing one run. Stevenson came on in the fifth, allowing 2 hits and one earned run in three innings of work. Stevenson picked up the win for the Vikings.


Oak Hill got 6 good innings from Mason Davis who struck out 12 batters and surrendered one earned run.


The Oaks got on the board in the first inning as Joseph Anteby hit a 2-out double to left center and came around to score when Davis singled him in for a 1-0 lead.


Symmes Valley tied the game up in the bottom of the inning as Randy Adkins registered the first of his two RBIs on the day with a single up the middle.


The Oaks got the lead back in the top of the third as Eddie Abele scored on a fielder's choice.


In the sixth, Andy Meldick singled into center scoring Williams to give Oak Hill a 3-1 lead heading to the bottom of the frame.


The Vikings began the inning as Tanner Thompson, Zander Hurn and Mason Stevenson all singled to load up the bases. Then with two outs, a passed ball on a third strike allowed Luke Niece to advance to first and Thompson to score making it a one-run game.


Will Jones followed with an RBI-single to score Hurn and Corn drove a single into left field to score two more and give the Vikings the lead for good.


The Vikings got another insurance run as Aydan Taylor singled in Jones to make it 6-3.


Stevenson pitched a scoreless seventh, giving up just a two-out single before getting the final batter to ground out to third to end the game.


Jones was 2-3 with an RBI, Corn 2-4 with an RBI, Adkins 2-3 with 2 RBI, Taylor 1-3 with an RBI, with Thompson, Hurn and Stevenson all 1-3.


Symmes Valley host Portsmouth Notre Dame on Tuesday.
