Virginia stuns UNC; walk-off FG gives Utah win over USC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Mike Hollins ran for three touchdowns and Malik Washington made an incredible effort on the go-ahead score fourth quarter to help the Virginia Cavaliers upset the No. 10 North Carolina Tar Heels 31-27 on Saturday night, shaking up the Atlantic Coast Conference race.

The win for the Cavaliers (2-5, 1-2 ACC) with its first-ever road win against a top-10 opponent.

“What you saw," Virginia coach Tony Elliott said, “Is just a group that believed.”

Trailing by three, Washington caught a pass from Tony Muskett and turned toward the goal line as multiple UNC defenders converged on him. He just kept churning his legs as he collided, bouncing off one tackler, then shrugging off another before pushing his way into the end zone and began to flex in celebration.

Will Bettridge added the point after and Virginia clung to a 31-27 lead with 8:51 remaining in the game.

North Carolina (6-1, 3-1) was able to strip Hollins at the goal line and the ball bounced straight out the back of the end zone with 4:50 left. Thus, giving the ball back to the Tar Heels with a chance to regain the lead.

Virginia’s defense managed to bend but not break, as UNC drove to the Cavalier 20. But Drake Maye's fourth down pass to Devontez “Tez” Waker on the sideline inside the 10-yard line would fall incomplete to end the ensuing drive.

The Tar Heels got one last chance, forcing a punt to get the ball back to Maye with 1:12 left and no timeouts — only to see James Jackson haul in Virginia’s clinching interception with 26 seconds left.

Utah 34, USC 32

LOS ANGELES — Despite blowing an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter, Utah managed to mount a last-minute drive, setting up Cole Becker to nail a 38-yard field goal as time expired to give the 14th-ranked Utes a thrilling 34-32 victory over No. 18 Southern California on Saturday night.

The Trojans (6-2, 4-1 Pac-12) finally took the lead on Caleb Williams' 11-yard touchdown scamper with 1:46 left after USC struggled to reach the end zone for most of the contest.

Williams threw for 256 yards, but no touchdown passes for the second-straight game. The loss pretty much ended the national title hopes for defending Heisman Trophy winner and his Trojans, who have suffered back-to-back losses to Notre Dame and Utah.

Utah got the ball back and mounted a drive that included Ja’Quinden Jackson’s fourth-and-1 conversion run to the USC 40 with 19 seconds left. Then quarterback Bryson Barnes helped lead Utah down the field with a spectacular 26-yard scramble to get the Utes (6-1, 3-1) well into range for Becker.

Barnes passed for a career-high 235 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for another score to help the Utes win their third-straight against the Trojans

Oklahoma 31, UCF 29

NORMAN, Okla. — Former UCF quarterback Dillion Gabriel threw three touchdown passes and Oklahoma's defense stopped a two-point attempt in the closing minutes to help the No. 6 Sooners hold on to beat the UCF Knights 31-29 in a Big 12 Conference game on Saturday.

Gabriel, who transferred to Oklahoma (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) before the 2022 season, completed 25 of his 38 passes for 253 yards. He helped the Sooners rally in the final quarter after they fell behind 23-17 after three quarters.

Drake Stoops caught a swing pass from Gabriel for an 11-yard touchdown score to tie the game up, and Zach Schmit made the extra point to put the Sooners up 24-23.

Then Gavin Sawchuk's 30-yard burst for a touchdown Oklahoma'd next possession put the Sooners up 31-23 with 3:13 to play.

But the Knights responded with Javon Baker scored on a 12-yard touchdown reception from John Rhys Plumlee with 1:16 remaining.

The Knights (3-4, 0-4) went for a two-point conversion to tie the game. Running back Xavier Townsend caught a backward pass and was looking to throw, but Oklahoma's Kendal Dolby dragged him down for a loss to secure the thrilling win.
