IRONTON — Uh guys. We have another game yet to play.
Coming off a big 3-1 win over a good Valley team on Wednesday to clinch the Southern Ohio Conference-1 title, the St. Joseph Flyers were lacking the focus and energy needed when playing on Thursday.
But after a sluggish first half, the Flyers regrouped and broke a 1-1 tie and beat the Portsmouth Clay Panthers 4-1 to wrap up an unbeaten SOC record.
St. Joseph (14-2-1, 8-0) took a 1-0 lead with just 3:15 left in the first half when Landon Rowe scored off a cross from the right side pass from Wesley Neal.
But Clay tied the game when Brady Hadsell scored an unassisted goal off a turnover with only 1:09 on the clock.
Jack Whaley took over in the second half as he produced a hat trick by scoring all 3 goals for the Flyers.
Whaley scored at the 20:05 mark when Rowe made a cross from the left side and fed him the ball for the goal.
Whaley then scored off of a through ball assist from Eli Whaley and it was 3-1 with 15:10 on the clock.
The duo teamed up again with 7:15 to play as Eli Whaley gave Jack Whaley a nice touch pass feed and he fired the shot into the box.
St. Joseph took a whopping 45 shots but only landed 4. The Flyers had 22 shots on goal, 7 corner kicks and 3 fouls.
Portsmouth Clay (3-10-1, 2-5) was held to just 5 shots and connected on one of 2 shots on goal. The Panthers had no corner kicks and 2 fouls.
The Flyers play in the district tournament on Thursday, Oct. 17, when they host the winner of the Rock Hill vs. Northwest game.
