ATHENS – Dwight Wilson III scored a new career-high 31 points to help lead the Ohio Bobcats (11-9, 3-4 MAC) past the Western Michigan Broncos (6-13, 2-4 MAC) 88-76 on Tuesday night.
Wilson III shot 13-of-16 from the field and 5-of-7 from the free throw line. He also grabbed 11 rebounds. Freshman guard AJ Brown added 16 points, shooting 6-of-10 from the field.
For the game, the Bobcats shot 50 percent from the field, including 9 three-pointers and was 13-of-18 from the line.
The Broncos shot 46 percent from the field, but Ohio out-rebounded Western 41-33.
The Bobcats used an 8-0 run to build an eight-point lead with 10:48 remaining in the first half. Brown drained a three to jumpstart the scoring run.
But Western would respond with a 6-0 run of their own, with four of their points coming at the foul line, and make the score 22-20.
Roderick would nail a three and Wilson would score on a put-back to give Ohio a 27-20 advantage.
The Broncos would make another run, this time scoring eight straight to take their first lead of the game.
Jaylin Hunter and AJ Clayton would contribute a score from behind the arc as Ohio would outscore the Broncos 12-7 the rest of the way to take a 39-35 lead at halftime.
Western Michigan's Titus Wright opened up the second half with a slam to cut the Bobcat lead to just one possession, but Roderick would bury another three to give Ohio a 42-37 lead.
The Broncos quickly scored six in a row to capture the lead again, but Clayton would drill back-to-back three point jumpers to put Ohio out in front again with 13 minutes left to play.
Ohio would take control of the game for the rest of the second half, as a driving layup from Hunter and a dunk from Wilson III helped give the Bobcats cushion their lead.
The Bobcats continued to pull way, stretching the lead to12 points lead with two minutes left to play. The lead extended to 16 points with Brown's dunk on an assist from Hunter. Lamar Norman Jr. led the Broncos with 20 points, followed by Wright with 16 points and 5 rebounds.
Up next, the Bobcats will travel to face the Akron Zips this Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
