Winners and Losers on Day 2 of the NCAA Tournament

WINNERS:

Yale: The Bulldogs pulled out the big upset of Day 2 in the tournament, despite being a 14-point underdog. Despite being heavily out-rebounded and allowing Auburn to shoot nearly 51% from the field, the Bulldogs had single-digit turnovers and made critical play-after-play down the stretch to win.

Jaedon LeDee: A monster game from the Aztec forward, going 11-of-18 from the field for 32 points and had 8 rebounds in San Diego State's 69-65 win over UAB.

Walter Clayton: Sometimes a loss can overshadow a player's performance, and that happened to Clayton on Friday. The 6-foot 3 guard scored 33 points and went 4-of-10 from the 3-point line in Florida's 102-100 loss to Colorado.

Pac-12 and Big East Conferences: Both conferences finished the first two days without a blemish. The Pac-12 went 4-0 and the all three Big East qualifiers advanced to the round of 32. And while the three Big East teams made a case for teams such as Seton Hall and St. John's, I'd almost say the SEC helped solidify that argument.

LOSERS:

Southeastern Conference: While the SEC didn't have a losing record on day two, they did have two higher seeded team fall. So after getting eight teams into the dance, all that remains is Tennessee, Alabama and Texas A&M. And worst yet, there's a chance the SEC might struggle to get a team into the Sweet 16 next weekend.

Announcing teams: I didn't want to say anything yesterday. Mostly because I needed to sleep on it and try again today, but man, some of these announcing crews have been hit-or-miss. Some were perfect for the moment, like the crew of Brad Nessler and Brendan Haywood or Ian Eagle, Bill Raftery and Grant Hill. But then there were some that just don't match the level of what past tournament have had. And I hate saying it, but despite Stan Van Gundy and Avery Johnson's wealth of knowledge, they were boring to listen to. This year sort of showed that the bench is beginning to get thinner when it comes to good announcers.

Mountain West Conference: The talking heads discussed ad nauseam prior to this weekend how the Mountain West had a strong contention of teams to pick from. But it was most certainly a bloodbath this week, as the conference sent seven teams dancing, but only Colorado State who won a First Four game but was eliminated by Texas , Utah State, and San Diego State have won a game thus far (and CSU's win was a First Four game).

Saint Mary's: The stars had seemed to align for the Gaels, winning the West Coast Conference regular season and tournament titles. They even beat Gonzaga in two of the three meetings between the two conference juggernauts this season. But their hopes of making a serious tournament run came to a grinding halt as they succumbed to the 5-12 upset at the hands of Grand Canyon.
