Wisconsin parts ways with Chryst after bad start

MADISON, WI — After a 2-3 start, Wisconsin has decided to part ways with Paul Chryst on Sunday.

"After a heartfelt and authentic conversation with Coach Chryst about what is in the long-term best interest of our football program, I have concluded that now is the time for a change in leadership," athletic director Chris McIntosh said in a news release Sunday. "Paul is a man of integrity who loves his players. I have great respect and admiration for Paul and the legacy of him and his family at the University of Wisconsin."

Chryst leaves his alma mater with a 67-26 record in his seven-plus season with the Badgers. He won 10 games or more in four of his first five seasons in Madison, won both the Cotton and Orange Bowls, and won three Big Ten West Division titles.

The program began to seemingly fall off at the beginning of the 2020 season, going 4-3. Then in 2021, the Badgers got off to a slow start and wound up finishing a disappointing 9-4.

The decision to fire Chryst came a day after Wisconsin lost 34-10 at home to Illinois. The Badgers also had two other disappointing loss including a 52-21 drubbing at the hands of Ohio State on September 24 and fell 17-14 at home to Washington State on September 10.

Defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard has been named interim coach.
